How does online tutoring work?

Lessons work best on a laptop or desktop with in-built microphone and video features. A good internet connection is needed, and a mouse rather than a touchpad is easier. If you have headphones, they really help block out any distracting family activity and improve sound quality for tutor and pupil.  At the start of each session I email a link to a Google document with resources for the lesson. Students have editing access, so that they can add ideas or notes and provide written responses to tasks. They can either download their Google documents and save them, or they can bookmark the links for revision later.

What video calling App do I use?

I mainly use Google Meet, Zoom or Skype to make the lessons engaging and interactive. Screen sharing and instant messaging mean I can highlight and draw attention to particular aspects of their work and give instant praise and feedback via the comment boxes. I might add a link in the Google document to additional resources to supplement the learning in the session. Audio rather than video also works if that makes a student feel less self-conscious.

Other benefits of online tuition

Students get to keep instant digital examples from every lesson which are much clearer than handwritten records; these can also be saved easily in a file and are much harder to lose! Tuition is delivered in the comfort of your home at a time to suit a family schedule. All that’s needed is a quiet space - the kitchen table is fine as long as there’s not a whole load of family activity going on!

Home schooling tutor support

Experienced teacher guidance to ensure school tasks are completed with confidence

For children unable to go to school the challenge of completing the tasks set by their teacher can be daunting. They miss the motivation of their teacher's praise and the support of their peers. It can feel lonely and isolating. And parents often face the brunt of this.

I offer supervision and guidance to make home schooling a positive and productive time. I'll make sure tasks set by school are completed. I give feedback and praise. I support as any class teacher or teaching assistant would if they were sitting next to your child in the classroom.
